Butch Pierson

As a Key First Assistant on many of these shows it was Butch’s responsibility to coordinate the organization of the camera equipment needed in the day to day filming of the different shows. It was also his responsibility to order or oversee the ordering of special cameras: high speed, crash cameras, crane cameras, et cetera for the filming of Second Units or Stunt units. It is his duty to set cameras for the proper placement for good coverage as directed by the Director of Photography. On some smaller shows he has worked himself as the Director of Photography on documentaries, webisodes, and instructional videos.

Butch Pierson’s love of the martial arts started with Judo in 1964. Being a “military brat” that started in Washington State at McCord Air Force Base. Next was the Hawaii Pearl City Dojo, then onto Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, and finally in Reseda, California under sensei Bill Nata achieving Shodan. In high school he wrestled for three years and tried his hand at boxing. In 1972 he started studying Korean Tae Kwon Do in San Bernardino, reaching the rank of green belt, but like many he was greatly influenced by Bruce Lee’s movie Enter the Dragon, and the new television series Kung Fu, and so he joined up with Kung Fu San Soo in 1973. His first Kung Fu instructor was Master Jerry Druckerman, then Master Chuck Cory, and then Master Paul Borrisoff.

Butch’s hard worked paid off in 1995 when he earned his 8th degree black belt, and the title of “Master” in 1985. Around the same time he also studied Laido obtaining the rank of brown belt under Sensei Jim Shibata. Then the big shift came when Butch became a Level 1 instructor in the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system. Today he helps to instruct in Kung Fu at Gus Gates Kung Fu in Westlake, California, and he continues to train in, and support, the RBPP system.

The combination of martial arts and the motion picture industry has given Butch the opportunity to meet and work with many famous martial artists: James Couburn, Don Wilson, Jeff Imada, Mako, James Lew, Steven Seagal, Toshiro Obata, David Carradine, and Gene LaBell.

The Reality-Based Personal Protection community is fortunate to have such a grounded martial artist, and a profession that touches millions all over the world.
